You start where Archduke Ferdinand II put his collection, and the Kunst- und Wunderkammer is the room everything else at Ambras is arranged around. The castle’s own material calls it the oldest museum in the world. English Wikipedia makes the narrower claim that it is the only Renaissance Kunstkammer still standing where it was assembled, the comparable collections at Munich, Prague, Stuttgart, Dresden and Kassel having been plundered or broken up. Both versions are worth knowing and neither is mine to settle. What is actually in the cabinets.
The three armouries
Not a wall of pikes. Ferdinand collected armour by the man who wore it, and the Heldenrüstkammer, built in 1589, is described as the first systematic presentation of objects in the history of museums. That sentence sounds like curatorial throat-clearing until you stand in it and realise you are looking at a filing system four centuries old that still works. The armouries in detail.
The Spanish Hall
Built 1569 to 1572, with 27 full-length portraits of Tyrolean rulers along the walls. It is the grandest room in the building and reliably the coldest, because it is a free-standing hall and it holds winter the way a church does. Take the layer you left in the car. The hall, and its 27 rulers.
The Bath of Philippine Welser
Preserved in its original form, which is rarer than the phrase makes it sound, and it is the most personal thing in the castle. Ferdinand rebuilt the place for her between 1563 and 1567, having married her in secret. Her story.
The Upper Castle, from April to October
From 1 November to 31 March the Habsburg Portrait Gallery is closed, while the Kunst- und Wunderkammer, the three armouries, the Spanish Hall, the Bath of Philippine Welser and the Strasser glass stay open. Same ticket, same counter, smaller castle. The gothic sculpture collection keeps that same April-to-October season, and needs no museum ticket either way. The portrait gallery is the one people miss without being told: more than 200 Habsburg paintings, and the reason AP from Germany, visiting in June, came away calling it a castle worth seeing with an impressive painting gallery. The Schlosspark
A Paradise garden and a medicinal-herb garden, kept by the Österreichische Bundesgärten, and the part of Ambras you can walk without buying anything. Swen from Germany, visiting in October, described the castle as well preserved with a beautiful park, and the park is what makes the two and a half hours the castle recommends stretch comfortably into an afternoon, which is what I would plan for.
