The best time to visit Schloss Ambras

Going out to Amras? The castle's own admission is on the platform at the same figure its own shop asks and two euros under the door, it cancels free up to 24 hours before, and under-19s go in free either way.
Check ticket availabilityApril to October: the full castle
Everything is open, including the Habsburg Portrait Gallery in the Upper Castle with its more than 200 paintings and the gothic sculpture collection. The park is worth an hour on its own, and the Paradise and medicinal-herb gardens are doing something. AP from Germany visited in June and came away describing a castle worth seeing with an impressive painting gallery, which is a June sentence: he saw the Upper Castle. Katja, also in summer, called it very beautiful and very spacious with a great deal to see.
November: do not
The castle is closed for the entire month. There is no reduced visit, no weekend opening, nothing. If November is when you are in Innsbruck, put the day somewhere else and do not let anybody tell you the castle is always open. What a day without Ambras looks like.

December to March: the smaller castle
From 1 November to 31 March the Habsburg Portrait Gallery is closed, while the Kunst- und Wunderkammer, the three armouries, the Spanish Hall, the Bath of Philippine Welser and the Strasser glass stay open. Same ticket, same counter, smaller castle. The gothic sculpture collection keeps that same April-to-October season, and needs no museum ticket either way. I want that in front of anyone booking a winter date, because the mismatch I see is specific: people come for the portrait gallery, find the Upper Castle closed, and nobody told them. Told in advance, the same visit is a good one. Nicolas from the UK was here in December, called it a very nice castle and said the audio guide was worth getting. The Kunstkammer, the armouries and the Spanish Hall are the strongest rooms in the building, and all three are open. What the winter ticket still buys.
The castle’s own published tariff runs on the April-to-October season, and I have seen a lower winter figure quoted in places the castle itself does not publish. I am not going to print a number I cannot stand behind. Read the winter price off schlossambras-innsbruck.at, and see the published tariff for the rest.
Time of day, and the way home
The doors open at ten and a ticket runs to five, so an arrival before eleven gives you the castle’s recommended two and a half hours with room to sit in the park afterwards. The other end of the day has a practical catch: everyone leaves at closing and the bus back fills up. The routes, and the five o’clock problem.
Pick a date you can still change
The castle’s own admission is sold on the platform at its own online figure, around sixteen euros, two euros under the price at the door, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. In a city where the weather decides whether you go up a mountain or into a castle, that second part is worth more than the first.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Schloss Ambras?
Between April and October, when the whole castle including the Habsburg Portrait Gallery is open. The seasonal calendar.
Is Schloss Ambras closed in November?
Yes, for the whole month, every year. December reopens on the ordinary 10:00 to 17:00 hours with the winter closures in place.
Is it worth visiting Schloss Ambras in winter?
Yes, if you know what you are buying. The Kunst- und Wunderkammer, the three armouries, the Spanish Hall, the bath and the glass are all open; the portrait gallery and the gothic sculptures are not, until 31 March. The honest verdict.
Does the ticket cost less in winter?
The castle publishes its tariff for the main season and I have found no winter figure on its own pages, so I am not printing one. Check schlossambras-innsbruck.at for your date.
